Pablo Picasso Units
The month of March was dedicated to the artist Pablo Picasso for grades 2nd-4th. This bulletin board was inspired by one of my favorite quotes by Pablo Picasso, "Every child is an artist, the problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up." Some students really enjoyed his style while others described it as "creepy" or "weird". We had some really good class conversations about how some people lean towards certain styles of art rather it being realistic, abstract, non objective, etc... We started the lesson reading the book, "When Pigcasso Met Mootisse" by Nina Laden and compared and contrasted the styles of the two artists. For second and third grade we played the roll a Picasso game to get some practice on how to draw portraits in his style. Once we got the hang of it, students created their own abstract portraits in the style of Pablo Picasso without the game.
For the fourth grade, I used a webquest that I created to help them do a little of their own research on the artist using the ipads. I created a QR code for them to scan so it would take them straight to the website. Try it out for yourself to check out the steps they went through for this project!
Here are some of the final results of their cubist guitar compositions:
This webquest took a while to make but it helped make the students so much more engaged and independent in their learning. I even had time to make some of my own Picasso inspired doodles!
