1st Grade Melted Snowmen
In this unit, students learned about 2D art versus 3D art. The first day we talked about the science of how a snowman melts. We discussed how to turn a frozen solid into a liquid with heat and how to freeze a liquid into a solid. This was a great way to incorporate science into an art lesson because first grade was currently learned about solids, liquids, and temperature. Here is the Prezi I used for the unit:
In between the week of letting the clay dry and firing the pieces in the kiln, we made snowman paintings. We used warm and cool colors to symbolize temperature in our paintings. On the cool colors side the students painted a full snowman, and on the warm colors side the students painted a melted snowman. They then used oil pastel to add details and to add snowflakes around the border. Some students also added glitter to the border.
