3rd Grade Ancient Greece

Collaborating with the third grade, we created our own greek columns in art using textured marble paper along with a ancient greek vase. We reviewed the different types of columns (doric, ionic, corinthian) and what characteristics set them apart from each other. Students illustrated their own type of capital and created the flutes of the column by folding the paper accordian style. We then discussed different types of pottery from ancient Greece, exploring various styles and forms. The students learned about an ancient pottery technique called sgraffito and we made our own kind of scratch art in order to scratch our designs into the vases. The first step is to cover your paper in oil pastel by bearing down hard in order to create a thick layer. Then I mixed dish soap with black tempera paint to coat their papers. The students then picked a shape for their vase and scratched through the black paint to uncover the first layer of oil pastel for their surface designs.
