Pumpkin Paintings
Kindergarten and 1st Grade got to make pumpkin paintings this year in the month of October. This tied into our color mixing unit. I only gave the students the primary colors (red, yellow, blue) and it was their job to make the secondary colors with their painting partner. The first step was to draw the pumpkins out with pencil and then outline with a black oil pastel. I encouraged first grade to add different values of orange to their pumpkins and some actually did more than one and experimented with overlapping. The second step was to mix red and yellow together to make orange for their pumpkin. They then mixed yellow and blue to get green for the stems or vines. Then they mixed blue and red to make purple for their background. The last step was to make an expressional face on their pumpkin. Some chose not to while some had a lot of fun with making their pumpkin look happy, scary, surprised, etc...
