Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead)


3rd and 4th grade students learned about Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) for hispanic heritage month. This is one of my favorite lessons because it talks about out hispanic cultures cope with death and they actually celebrate it. They celebrate all the good times they had with friends or family members that have passed away. Any time I reference the movie "The Book of Life" all the kids are like, "Oh Yeah!". It is a multi day holiday that is celebrated around parts of Mexico on November 1st and 2nd. I also tied in a symmetry lesson with the projects we created. 3rd Grade made papel picado(cut paper) decorations out of colored tissue paper while 4th grade made a calaveras(sugar skulls). I showed them this prezi to introduce the topic: The short animated film in the prezi helped illustrate the holiday better than I could describe in words.
