3rd Grade's Turtles
After 3rd Grade went on their field trip to the Georgia Aquarium we did a unit on sea turtles. We talked about the difference between 2D and 3D art focusing on implied and actual texture. For the implied texture we made turtle tempera paintings. We drew the turtles out the first day and then traced over our pencil lines with an oil pastel and added other details to show texture the second class. The last class we painted the turtles using tempera cakes and doing the oil pastel resist technique. For the 3D portion of this unit we made sea turtles out of clay. We used texture rolling pins and other hand building techniques to create actual texture on our turtles. We also tried out some neat texture and speckled crystal glazes.
