1st Grade Melted Snowman

First Graders have been working on a snowman unit since we got back from Christmas break. We started with a painting making one side warm colors(red, orange, yellow) and one side cool colors(blue, purple, green). On the cool color side, we painted a full snowman and the next class session, and a melted snow on the warm colored side. We connected the lesson to heat transer and how some solids can turn to a liquid, such as snow or an ice cube, by a heat source(the sun). The next week we made melted clay snowman. The kids loved it when I used the Olaf reference and the scene in the movie where he wants to be somewhere warm in a tropical paradise and doesn't realize that he would melt. While day dreaming about being on a beach, he starts melting by the fire. The kids said they learned how to make a pinch pot in Kindergarten, so we took that skill and pushed it a little further. We talked about the difference between their 2D artwork(warm/cool colors painting) and their 3D artwork( melted clay snowman).
