Mondrian Math

First Grade students covered the elements of shape and space, and they will began to apply the use of space to create relationships and meaning in their art. We studied the works from Piet Mondrian and made a collage similar to his style using the primary colors and horizontal and vertical black lines. They learned basic math skills like how to measure with a ruler in order to make the right size shapes to fit in the lines. The next half of the unit, we discussed the difference between 2D and 3D. They practiced folding and cutting in collage and in 3D design in order to build a house.

We started the Unit off with an introduction about Mondrian with this Prezi.

They loved the animated Mondrian , Broadway Boogie-Woogie, video. They still ask me if they can watch it almost every class.

Here are some of the final products of their 2D Mondrian collage compositions and their 3D houses.
