Surreal Surprise

The central focus of this unit is about Surrealism and learning about and discussing works of art by Rene Magritte and Salvador Dali. The project is made from mixed media, centered on painting a self-portrait in the style of Rene Magritte’s painting, Son of Man, and students drawing a symbol that represents themselves to cover their face. Then they will pick from magazine clippings to create a collaged background in a surrealist style inspired by Salvador Dali or other surrealist collage artists such as, Eugenia Loli or Sarah Eisenlohr. In addition to learning about these mixed media practices of drawing, painting, and collage work to create a composition, students will also be learning about symbols and how they can be used in art to help convey meaning.
